The fifth season of Apple TV+'s biggest sci-fi series, ‘For All Mankind’ began filming last Monday in Los Angeles, California. The news was officially confirmed by the show's creator, Ronald D. Moore at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday.
The filming is expected to take around six months for the 10-episode fifth season. As per the current schedule, production will wrap by the end of January 2025. So, the fifth season is likely to be released sometime in Fall 2025.
Apart from the filming confirmation, the show has also revealed the new characters for the fifth season. Costa Ronin joins Season 5 as Lenya, a Soviet politician and former cosmonaut, while Mireille Enos joins as Celia Boyd, a member of the Peacekeeper Security Force on Mars. The two new faces will join the returning cast of Joel Kinnaman as Edward "Ed" Baldwin, Cynthy Wu as Kelly Baldwin, Wrenn Schmidt as Margo Madison, Krys Marshall as Danielle Poole, Coral Peña as Aleida Rosales, Toby Kebbell as Miles Dale, Tyner Rushing as Samantha Massey, Daniel Stern as Eli Hobson, Svetlana Efremova as Irina Morozova, and Edi Gathegi as Dev Ayesa.
Although the SDCC panel of the show kept mum on the plot of Season 5, the creator did reveal a few interesting things about the new spin-off series. Ronald D. Moore revealed that the new series, Star City will release after Season 5 while also confirming that it is yet to be written and he has already kept multiple seasons in his mind for the spinoff. On the topic of ‘For All Mankind’ Season 5, Moore confirmed that filming has begun, but they are continuously editing the scripts to keep everyone on the sets guessing. Moore has previously teased a seven-season plan for ‘For All Mankind.’
‘For All Mankind’ Season 4 premiered on November 10, 2023, and finished its 10-episode run on January 12, 2024. In the Season 4 finale, Margo is led out of Mission Control in handcuffs, and her speech to the judge is heard over the ending. The Soviet Union launches a probe into Irina, while detainee atrocities on Mars make headlines. Lee's wife lands on Mars, along with a slew of other North Korean exiles. Dani returns to Earth, met by her family and new grandson. Dev looks out from Korolev Crater at Goldilocks, which by 2012 had become the location of a large mining operation known as Kuznetsov Station.
In Season 4, Happy Valley has swiftly grown its foothold on Mars in the eight years since season three, transforming erstwhile rivals into collaborators and rocketing into the new millennium. Since 2003, the space program's focus has shifted to the capture and mining of extraordinarily lucrative, mineral-rich asteroids that might affect the destiny of both Earth and Mars. However, latent conflicts among the occupants of the now-sprawling international outpost threaten to derail everything they've accomplished.
For All Mankind is produced by Sony Pictures Television. Ronald D. Moore is the creator of the show along with Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi, who serve as showrunners for Season 5. Executive producers are Moore and Maril Davis of Tall Ship Productions, as well as David Weddle, Seth Edelstein, Bradley Thompson, and Kira Snyder.
