Jason Momoa's upcoming TV Series ‘Chief of War’ has officially begun filming today (Feb 13) in Auckland, New Zealand after wrapping up its Hawaii shoot earlier this month. The historical drama began filming in November last year in Hawaii and wrapped up the first phase of the shoot earlier this month. The series will shoot in New Zealand until June 16, 2023.
On Saturday, Jason Momoa also confirmed that he has landed in New Zealand to begin the shoot on the series in which he stars and has co-created with Thomas Pa’a Sibbett. The series is set in the late 18th Century when the four major kingdoms of Hawaii were constantly in a state of war. Legendary warrior Kaʻiana (Jason Momoa) is pulled into battle when Seers and visions name him as the one who will fulfill an Ancient Prophecy that will bring peace to all of Hawaii.
The nine-episode series stars Jason Momoa as Kaʻiana, Temuera Morrison as King Kahekili, Luciane Buchanan as Kaʻahumanu, Te Ao o Hinepehinga as Kaʻiana, Kaina Makua as Kamehameha, Moses Goods as Moku, Siua Ikaleʻo as Nahiʻ, Brandon Finn as Prince Kūpule, James Udom as Tony, Mainei Kinimaka as Heke, Te Kohe Tuhaka as Namakeʻ, Siaosi Fonua as Maui, and Cliff Curtis as Keōua.
Jason Momoa and Thomas Pa’a Sibbett also serve as executive producers along with Francis Lawrence, Jenno Topping, Peter Chernin, showrunner Doug Jung, Brian Mendoza, Tracey Cook, Molly Allen, and Anders Engstrom. Justin Chon directed the first two episodes and executive-produced them. Fifth Season and Chernin Entertainment produce.
Recently Jason Momoa has kept himself busy with Apple TV+ as he previously starred in the post-apocalyptic action-drama “See” at the streamer, which recently finished its run for three seasons. ‘Chief of War’ marks the first time Momoa has written for television.
