Created from the 2021 film of the same name, this series explores in much detail the life and struggles of the Broto family who own and run a guesthouse in Yogyakarta. Spanning eight episodes each of 40 minutes, this drama showcases and delivers moments of warmth and emotional introspection that many families undergo.

The Broto family consists of Mr. and Mrs. Broto, the couple who run the inn. Their eldest daughter Pur is a chef. She lost her fiancé and is undergoing unexplainable grief. The second daughter Sri is an aspiring singer while their youngest son Tarjo is a business student who wishes to bring a modern touch to the guesthouse. A scandal wrecks their since simple life and now they have to deal with this as a family.

Waters change when Mr. Broto’s long-time friend Jody and his wife Anna arrive at the guesthouse. Jody has a short stay as he has to leave for work. However, Anna stays behind to enjoy life in Yogyakarta. Anna is a writer who is facing writer’s block but soon forms a bond with Tarjo. Things change when, on a drunken night, they both share a kiss. This leads to tension and guilt mostly seen on Anna’s face as she is married. This is what makes the plot exciting as both are undergoing phases of denial and guilt. On the other hand, Pur realizes that there is life beyond grief and starts exploring that. Sri and her husband Jarot, who got married when they were young, deal with personal ambitions as well as familial duties. Also, we have Atmo, who is here for humor. He finds unexpected joy in helping a lost Korean tourist. This creates a lot of fun banter which gives us a good break from the usual and serious plot.

The main hero of the plot lies in the story of this show. Each character has a backstory which adds depth and layers to the plot. None of these themes feel pointless and create a very nuanced narrative. The show is slow-paced but for a change, we need this slow pacing to understand what exactly is happening in the lives of the characters.  The main plot, however, in my opinion, is that of Trajo and Ann. This is where the scandal begins which makes it different for the Broto family to manage the inn. It is very interesting to watch how the family handles and deals with the drama that unfolds, especially when an old friend and his wife are involved. If you are someone who thrives on drama and complicated plot twists, this show is a fun watch for your weekend. With humor and heavy emotions, it is sure to give you a good storyline worth remembering.

Final Score- [8/10]
