Minimum Wage takes the familiar experience of working a low-paying job and transforms it into a fast-paced comedy about teenage employees and workplace disasters, all while operating a local pizza shop. The plot revolves around a group of teenagers attempting to balance school, personal problems, and the demands of working at a neighborhood pizzeria. Pizzerias are familiar workplaces with straightforward responsibilities, but keeping one functional requires teamwork, patience, and a certain level of competence. The employees of The Slice Club, however, struggle to demonstrate those qualities, creating opportunities for misunderstandings and comic confrontations. The contrast between the simplicity of their jobs and the chaos surrounding them is the irony on which Minimum Wage is built. The series has also thrown light on low-paying work without becoming overly serious. And that is one of the best parts about it. Rarely do we see such a comic portrayal of a serious issue, and thankfully, Minimum Wage is one of those few areas where it succeeds. They show us the pressure these teenagers are undergoing and what it actually means to have an eccentric boss.
But even with all this, Minimum Wage doesn’t manage to leave a mark. The point is that the plot of the show offers hardly anything that comes in the category of new. And that is a huge issue if you are wanting to watch something that hasn’t repeated itself in the past. A group of teenagers operating a pizzeria and facing misunderstandings amongst themselves is an age-old plot. It is high time makers stopped repeating these kinds of plots. What must be noted is that the creators try to develop Minimum Wage as a 90s-themed plot. This doesn’t mean that people wear those kinds of clothes. What is meant is that the overall vibes of the show are that of the 90s. The jokes also feel repetitive and don’t really make you laugh much. So as such, the so-called “workplace comedy” doesn’t really sail well in this show. Moreover, casting teenagers also doesn’t make things better.
There is also a lot of chaos. And yes, I do understand that chaos is a part of the drama given that the central setting is in a pizzeria. But the makers have relied too much on the chaos in order to get comedy out of it. At one point, this very chaos becomes annoying to even watch.
The plot is also highly predictable. Midway through watching, you already know what is going to happen towards the end. Even the pacing sometimes feels slow, though the overall duration of the show isn’t very long. These are just a few places where the makers could have at least given much more attention. The cast, however, has done a great job in their respective roles. It is safe to say that they are saviors of this plot and a show that wasn’t very well executed. Though the plot chosen is valuable, Minimum Wage falters because of the lack of proper execution. I was hoping for something better, but clearly that is not what we get. So all in all, I would suggest that there are other things to watch, and they'd better be tried.
