The movie starts with a bad dream Guille had. In this, he saw Bea (his wife) going into labor, but the childbirth wasn’t a happy one for the family as she died due to excessive blood loss. Soon after waking up from this dream, he did everything so that his wife could remain healthy and go into healthy labor.
Guille started controlling what she could have and do. The couple is sex deprived as Guille thinks that it’ll hit the baby’s head. However funny it seems on hearing, the man was devastated by only thinking of it. As he was scared because of the dream, he called Bea’s mother to stay with them.
Bea’s mom is an unusual mother who is obsessed with the US and even wears a dress made of its flag. Influenced by its culture, she even bought the first dress for her grandchild which was unexpectedly again the country’s flag.
The relationship Bea and her mother share isn’t a good one as the latter is very selfish and self-centred. It was suspicious when she was staying more than she was welcomed for. Later it was revealed that the old lady was deported and wasn’t there to support her daughter’s pregnancy journey.
This 95-minute film opened up with beautiful credits. I’m the one who usually skips the introduction part however seeing how crafty they got with this one, I waited to see what they were going to do. Following the rhythm set at the beginning, the plot got someone stale and boring at the end for the audience. There are just one or two laughing scenes other than that, it is just an average film attempting to make it big.
The characters shown in the film, be it Guille, Beau, mother, sister, and their friends, everyone has a great screen presence, but somehow you still most of the time feel detached from the story.
There are many scenes in the film which set the tone from funny to serious from time to time. Bea and her friend were pregnant at the same time hence, they also had their baby shower together. There’s a dance in that scene in which I noticed steps similar to the Oscar-winning song Naatu Naatu. It was a proud moment as it shows the influence Indian songs have on the entertainment industries of other parts of the world.
To sum it up, the film isn’t as fun a ride as it was supposed to be. Though they picked up the typical mother-in-law and suspicious son-in-law theme, it wasn’t as magical. Also, the last scene was made serious which ruined the fun of it all. Mainly, it seemed like the writers included several things that messed up their core plot for the audience. Had they stuck to the original plot, it would have been so much fun.
Final Score – [6.5/10]
