Umjolo: My Beginning My End explores the delicate intricacies of love, choice, and personal freedom, centering on Mayi, who forms an undeniable connection with Zweli on her 30th birthday. This connection shakes the very foundation of her life as she grapples with a pivotal decision: should she honor her engagement to a wealthy man whose family promises a secure future or follow her heart toward the man she truly loves?  However, Umjolo ventures beyond the clichés to present a nuanced take on the emotional turmoil faced by two people drawn together against all odds.

The film stands out by portraying the emotional freedom Mayi discovers in Zweli's presence. With him, she sheds the expectations of a restrictive future tied to her fiancé's affluent and overbearing family, represented particularly by her demanding future mother-in-law. In Zweli’s company, Mayi transforms into someone unrestrained, bold, and true to herself. This emotional journey captures the essence of love as a liberation force, but the film's idealized portrayal of romance requires viewers to suspend disbelief. It's not a story grounded in realism but rather an exploration of the heart's desires unbound by logic.

While the premise and the character arcs hold promise, the movie falters in its execution, particularly in its conclusion. The abrupt ending feels jarring and leaves a lingering sense of dissatisfaction. Mayi's predictable choice to abandon her obligations and embrace her love for Zweli is not the issue; rather, it’s the lack of coherence in how the narrative wraps up. In comparison to the earlier films in the Umjolo series, this installment fails to deliver the same emotional payoff.

For instance, Lethu’s triumphant dance at Mayi's wedding in the first film was a bold celebration of self-expression, while Zenele’s empowering decision to embrace single parenthood in the second film left viewers inspired. Unfortunately, My Beginning My End disrupts this flow, leaving audiences grappling with a conclusion that feels rushed and unsatisfying.

Another noteworthy criticism is the lack of closure for the men left behind. The series seems to consistently sideline these characters, leaving them with broken hearts and unresolved arcs. A more balanced approach, giving these characters meaningful resolutions, could add depth and fairness to the narrative, enhancing the series' overall appeal.

One of the strengths of the film lies in how it visually portrays Mayi’s internal struggles. Through carefully framed scenes and deliberate use of lighting, the film communicates her growing unease about the impending wedding. It becomes apparent that Mayi’s hesitations are not solely rooted in her feelings for Zweli. The suffocating environment created by her domineering mother-in-law also plays a significant role in her reluctance. This oppressive atmosphere is captured in subtle but effective ways, such as through dimly lit interiors and Mayi’s strained expressions during family gatherings, which contrast starkly with the brighter, freer moments she shares with Zweli.

In conclusion, Umjolo: My Beginning My End delivers a heartfelt exploration of love’s transformative power but stumbles in its storytelling. While it offers moments of emotional resonance and captures the essence of love as an adventure, its abrupt ending and lack of narrative cohesion leave much to be desired. Fans of the series may still find value in Mayi’s journey. Still, the film also underscores the need for the Umjolo franchise to evolve, providing a richer and more satisfying experience for all its characters and viewers alike.
