If period dramas are what excites you, Where the Mask Ends is your watch. The plot revolves around A Chou, a young woman who lives with her adoptive parents. She spent most of her life shouldering responsibility for her family and mostly putting their needs ahead of her own. When her adoptive mother falls ill and the medical bill becomes hard to pay, she opts for a rather unlikely solution.

The solution arrives through Wei Rao, a cruel heiress who wishes to use A-Chou as a pawn for her sudden unwanted marriage to Lu Zhuo.  What must be noted is that A-Chou is a lookalike of Wei Rao. A-Chou agrees to take her place in exchange for the funds that are required to repay her mother's medical bills. With this, neither of them expects to become lovers and get into a transactional relationship.

While the whole of the show is yet to unfold, from what we have seen, Where the Mask Ends is a very predictable plot; even if some elements of surprise may come later on, I don’t think it will change the fact that the plot of the show is rather too well known to us. The best thing about Where the Mask Ends is how well the makers have shown the overall period drama setting. The make-up, the set design, the overall look, and the vibe of the costumes make it clear that this is a period drama. The vibe check is passed. When it comes to acting, the cast so far has done a commendable job with whatever they showed us as their acting. They are convincing and complement their overall looks pretty well.

The pacing of Where the Mask Ends is also good. In the first few episodes that are out, the makers have introduced quite a bit of the characters to us and their backstories. A-Chou, Wei Rao, and the rest all have a backstory, and the makers waste no time in telling us about them. That way we don’t really have to wait for the build-up. I, for once, love that because if this does not take place, period dramas tend to become a bit boring. Hence, this is the need of the hour. In this aspect, the makers won. The Overall speed of the show is also good. You won’t feel bored because the pacing is sluggish. Things develop pretty fast.

The only issue, as I discussed earlier, is the reuse of the same old concept. Though it is too early to predict, I feel the ending is something we all know, and there is no surprise element. There will be some basic twists and turns, but none that can keep you hooked to watch Where the Mask Ends. At a time when so much content is out there, finding a plot that is unique is getting difficult. Sadly, this show has joined the bandwagon of those countless plots that aren’t new as such. One really has to be a lover of period drama to love this show. Even if you are, chances are, you might get frustrated too.

Final Score- [4/10]
