Finally almost a year after the Season 1 premiere, the second season of the hit sci-fi series, ‘3 Body Problem’ is all set to start filming early next month. The Netflix show that impressed viewers across the world is already renewed for the third season as well.
As per the current schedule, ‘3 Body Problem’ Season 2 will begin filming on April 7th, 2025, in London, England, and will take more than four months to wrap on August 22, 2025. Even though the show has already been renewed for the third season, there is no indication that Season 3 will be filmed along with the second season or just after. If we go by the filming schedule, we can expect ‘3 Body Problem’ Season 2 to be released sometime in the second half of 2026, but if we study the pattern of the first season, then viewers might have to wait till 2027.
The delay in the start of filming the second season might be due to the busy schedule of producers David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, who were working on another Netflix series, Death by Lightning that follows the presidency of James A. Garfield, leading up to his assassination by Charles J. Guiteau, who had been an admirer of his.
The first season comes to a heart-wrenching conclusion for Earth’s heroes. Jin’s ambitious Project Staircase, a glimmer of hope in the face of despair, has ultimately crumbled, leaving the brain of the man she has just begun to realize she loves adrift in the vastness of space. Saul (Adepo), initially resistant, has reluctantly accepted his new role as a Wallfacer, a position fraught with responsibility and uncertainty. Meanwhile, Auggie (González) has removed herself from the chaos of their situation, leveraging her innovative nanofiber technology to bring aid and support to struggling local communities.
As the remaining members of the Oxford Five grapple with their misfortunes, a determined Detective Da Shi (Wong) recognizes the urgency of rallying them back to their purpose. He discovers Jin and Saul, both nursing their emotional wounds by a hotel pool, enveloped in a haze of defeat. With a firm resolve, he guides them to a nearby marsh, alive with the buzzing presence of swarming cicadas. “People hate bugs; they’ve been trying to eradicate them forever,” Da Shi states, drawing a parallel to the San-Ti, who dismissively regard humans as nothing more than squashable pests. “Look around; they’re not going anywhere.” After pouring out a drink “for the bugs,” he reminds them with a sense of urgency that they have crucial work ahead—a mission that still requires their courage and determination.
Based on the bestselling novels by Cixin Liu, 3 Body Problem delves into humanity's response to an existential threat that looms over the world. Set against the tumultuous backdrop of China’s Cultural Revolution in the 1960s, the story introduces Ye Wenjie, a young woman whose pivotal choices set off a chain reaction with far-reaching implications across both space and time, leading to contemporary challenges. As the very fabric of reality begins to unravel in inexplicable ways, a brilliant ensemble of scientists—known as the Oxford Five—bands together. They unite their diverse expertise with that of a tenacious detective and a shadowy intelligence agency, forming an alliance dedicated to confronting and overcoming the impending crisis that could alter the course of humanity forever.
3 Body Problem Season 1 stars Jovan Adepo as Saul Durand, John Bradley as Jack Rooney, Rosalind Chao as Ye Wenjie, Liam Cunningham as Thomas Wade, Eiza González as Auggie Salazar, Jess Hong as Jin Cheng, Marlo Kelly as Tatiana Haas, Alex Sharp as Will Downing, Sea Shimooka as Sophon, Zine Tseng as Young Ye Wenjie, Saamer Usmani as Raj Varma, Benedict Wong as Da Shi and Jonathan Pryce as Mike Evans.
Benioff, Weiss, and Woo are the co-creators, executive producers, and writers of "3 Body Problem." Emmy Award winners Benioff and Weiss recently extended their multiyear deal to write, produce, and direct new series and films exclusively for Netflix. Other executive producers include Rian Johnson, Ram Bergman, and Nena Rodrigue from T-Street. Qi Lin, the late former Chairman of Yoozoo Group, and Jilong Zhao, the CEO of the rights holder, The Three-Body Universe, are also executive producers, along with Xiaosong Gao and Lauren Ma. Additionally, Brad Pitt, Jeremy Kleiner, and Dede Gardner from Plan B Entertainment serve as executive producers. Rosamund Pike and Robie Uniacke are executive producers for Primitive Streak.
