Netflix has revealed the first teaser trailer and premiere date for the Chinese-language series, ‘Copycat Killer.’ The crime thriller ‘Copycat Killer’ will be released on March 31 globally on Netflix.

Copycat Killer, based on a popular crime mystery novel by Japanese writer Miyuki Miyabe, is set in 1990s Taipei and tells the story of Taiwan's first serial murder case. Taking advantage of the public's fascination, the media-savvy serial killer turns the case into a national spectacle, fueling gossip and notoriety. A no-nonsense prosecutor, played by award-winning actor Wu Kang-ren, swears to solve the case only to discover that nothing is as it seems. Meanwhile, the killer repeatedly mocks law and justice as he seeks to destroy society's peace and order.

Genre series are fascinating as you won’t figure out who the killer is, right until the end,” shared Wu Kang-ren, known for his performances in Light The Night, Shards of Her, and Mom! Don’t Do That. “Every character is connected by hidden threads, which unravel throughout the story. Likewise, I follow my character in exploring these threads, gradually forming a beautiful web of connections. I look forward to bringing viewers on the journey of discovering the masterful storytelling behind each thread.”

Other members of the star-studded cast include Alice Ko, Tuo Tsung-hua, Cammy Chiang, Yao Chun-yao, Fandy Fan, and Hsia Teng-Hung, with a guest appearance by Ruby Lin (leading actress of Light the Night).

Below is the character description of each cast member of the series.

Wu Kang-ren plays prosecutor Guo Xiaoqi, who is determined to pursue the serial killer at all costs while the killer provokes him at every turn. The story is told through the eyes of Guo, a role that’s tailor-made for Wu.

Alice Ko plays counseling psychologist Hu Yunhui, who specializes in criminal psychology and assists in profiling murderers. To flesh out her character, Ko consulted with professional psychologists before filming started.

Tuo Tsung-hua plays Lin Shanyong, an Interpol officer who teams up with Guo to crack the serial murders.

Yao Chun-yao plays late-night show host Chen Heping, who has a nose for news and often breaks news scoops for her TV station.

Fandy Fan plays Shen Jiawen, a popular nightclub DJ, whose cheerful personality hides the unhealed wounds that lie within.

Cammy Chiang plays reporter Lu Yizhen, who crosses paths with Guo in her pursuit of journalistic truth. Discovering that they’re both headed in the same direction, Lu becomes Guo’s closest ally in tackling the case.

Hsia Teng-hung plays Hu Jianhe, the younger brother of psychologist Hu Yunhui, and is also Shen’s best friend from middle school. Through a series of incidents, both of them end up in the eye of the storm.

Ruby Lin makes a guest appearance as Yao Yaci, the leading anchor of a top-rated news station. This is Lin’s second outing with Netflix, following the success of Light the Night.

The production team spent over three years on preparation, adaptation, filming, and post-production to create a crime and mystery thriller of such complexity. “It’s a pleasure to finally bring what we have worked on for so long to the audience,” said co-director Chang Jung-chi. “Beneath the thriller and detective story lies a story of how humanity struggles between good and evil.

While most crime stories focus on details of the cases, Copycat Killer casts a wider net. “We hope to portray more facets of each character and their thoughts and reflections within an intriguing narrative,” explained co-director Henri Chang. “While the story begins with ‘evil’ as we know it, there is a lot more to reflect on and take away from the series.”

This gripping series is a co-production between Greener Grass Production and Nan Fang Film Productions, and it is directed by award-winning producers Hank Tseng and Phil Tang. “Copycat Killer depicts a story of how desires, when out of control, can cause evil to go viral in a city,” said Tseng. “We hope that the confluence and fluidity of good and evil in the series will be able to provide healing to our viewers in this world of madness, where a lot more can be done to help and support each other.”
