Netflix has announced a new science-fiction film “The Upper World,” which will star Daniel Kaluuya. The film will be an adaptation of debut contemporary sci-fi novel by Femi Fadugba who will also serve as executive producer. the story follows Esso, a young man who can see glimpses of the past and the future.
Along with starring in the film, Kaluuya will also serve as producer along with Screen Arcade's Eric Newman and Bryan Unkeless.
The Upper World is based on an upcoming novel by first-time physicist-turned-author Femi Fadugba. Set in Peckham, London, the story follows Esso, who is caught in a deadly feud and on the verge of expulsion when he realizes he has an unexpected gift — access to a world where he can see glimpses of both the past and the future. Meanwhile, a generation away, Rhia is walking to football practice in 2035, unaware that the mysterious stranger she’s about to meet desperately needs her help to avert a bullet fired 15 years earlier.
The Upper World is the first in a planned series of novels from Penguin U.K. and HarperCollins US, which are expected to publish the book in mid-2021 and early 2022, respectively. Eric Newman brought the property to Netflix.
Fadugba, has a master’s degree from Oxford University, where he published papers on quantum physics and was a Thouron Scholar at UPenn.
Kaluuya will next be seen in Warner Bros. film Judas and the Black Messiah which released their first trailer last week.
