If you wish to understand a culture, Descending Stories: A Life in Rakugo is what you must watch. Adapted from Harulo Kumota’s manga, this drama transforms the traditional Japanese art of rakugo storytelling into a tale of friendship, ambition, and the burden that comes with inheritance.
The plot of Descending Stories: A Life in Rakugo expands across several decades around two performers who are starkly different from each other. Yakumo is shown to be reserved and disciplined, while Sukeroku is charismatic and impulsive but blessed with a natural ability to captivate audiences. The friendship these two share is filled with both admiration and rivalry, with both having opposite views on art as well as life. But things don’t stop here. Complicating their stories further is a love triangle from which both seem unable to escape. It is then that we are shown the circumstances surrounding a mysterious death. With this, every revelation adds a new layer to their already complicated bond. Years later, the legacy has now fallen into the hands of Yotarou, a former convict who gets inspired by rakugo and dedicates his life to the craft. Now the tone of the series shifts towards a new tone: it starts to examine whether artistic traditions can survive through new generations and whether one can escape the ghost of the past.
One of the best things about Descending Stories: A Life in Rakugo is the way it has been directed. The stage performances are stunning. The makers manage to show us the emotional world of the performers. This ensures that even though scenes are supposed to be theatrical, they feel deeply personal when you watch them through the eyes of an audience. Another best thing, which is probably quite important among them all, is the performance by the cast. The actors fully embody the roles in which they are. You won’t understand when the acting gets over and when the real person starts. They portray loneliness with so much grace and emotion, which almost starts to feel real. The chemistry that the leads share is equally compelling, making the friendship and the rivalry feel hauntingly real.
The makers have also managed to capture the tradition of rakugo well. So many of us were unaware until we watched this. The art form forms the core of Descending Stories: A Life in Rakugo. Without it, the plot doesn’t exist. And thankfully, full justice has been done to it. However, the plot is a serious watch. This isn’t something that you watch for time to pass. There is a great deal of depth involved. Only if you have the time and the likelihood of such a show can you really enjoy it to the fullest. Otherwise, this might not be something that you would want to watch. And if you make up your mind to watch it, then be ready because the show will blow your mind. Not only is it great plot-wise, but also because you will get to see and learn so much from it.
Final Score- [7/10]
