GTO (2026) Netflix Series Review - A Story That Grows With Its Students

It's rare to see that even after two decades since its release, Great Teacher Onizuka remains one of the most beloved and cherished school dramas. Based on Tohru Fujisawa’s bestselling manga, the series follows the life and journey of Eikichi Onizuka, a former biker gang leader who dreams of becoming Japan’s greatest teacher ever. Though ridiculed at first, slowly and steadily, the dreams prove to be nothing less than inspiring.

Eikichi Onizuka is anything but a typical teacher that we see. He is loud, careless, reckless, and immature. His teaching methods are unconventional too, which leaves his colleagues and school administration questioning his decisions. However, even with all the chaos that he brings with himself, there lies a caring teacher who wants nothing but the best for his children. He understands their fears and refuses to leave their side, which soon earns him the respect of the students.

This was honestly one of the sweetest stories I watched. It shows us how sometimes the children are labeled as difficult, but in reality there is some deep underlying issue that needs to be understood. And who else can do it better than a teacher who builds a rapport with the students? The character of Eikichi Onizuka is precisely that. There is so much character development one can expect from him, and truly, the journey is filled with that. He initially starts as a biker gang leader, and in no one's dreams did anyone expect him to transform into a teacher. The way his attitude changes towards everything is what makes GTO such a soulful watch. From being a person who just had a dream of becoming a great teacher, to someone who ends up imparting life lessons, there is a different kind of development that we see in him. He, too, grows with his students. There is a reason why the manga continues to remain popular even after so many years of its release, and clearly the plot is a big reason for the same.

Not only that, the show is a mix of comedy and seriousness. And mind you, the comedy of errors is actually funny. The cast has great comic timing and the scenes are not only well written, but also well directed. Visually, the classroom and the school environment have been captured pretty well. While watching, one is surely transported back to school days, and you are also reminded of the teacher who left a lasting impact on you. That feeling of nostalgia is unmatchable, and GTO gives us that. The makers have beautifully captured the school background, so much so that somewhere, the backdrop also becomes a character in itself.

Coming to the pacing, that too is mindfully created. The makers ensure that nothing is rushed nor is anything dragged for no reason. That is also a rare thing. Each scene has been construed with intention. As a result, nothing feels out of place or questionable. So viewers, if you want to watch something peaceful and meaningful, GTO is your watch for all of it. I am sure we will all learn something from Eikichi Onizuka.
