The best new TV Show of 2019 returns in all its glory and beauty. ‘His Dark Materials’ Season 2 trailer (watch above) has been released at Comic-Con virtual and it looks incredibly epic. Season 2 is set to arrive this fall with one less episode as filming was derailed by the coronavirus pandemic.

Based on “The Subtle Knife” (the second novel in Philip Pullman’s trilogy), season 2 will find Lyra (Dafne Keen) in a strange and mysterious abandoned city called Cittàgazze, where she meets Will, the boy first seen in the human world in season one, who is also running from a troubled past.

Speaking at Comic-Con@Home on Thursday, executive producer Jane Tranter said that the new season will be seven episodes instead of eight after a standalone story starring James McAvoy as Lord Asriel was unable to shoot.

It was separate from the other seven episodes because it was a standalone episode which Jack had written with the blessing and input of Philip Pullman, which looked at what Lord Asriel had been doing between going through the anomaly at the end of season one and when we see Lord Asriel at the beginning of book three The Amber Spyglass,” Tranter said.

Legendary British actor Terence Stamp is joining the cast of the HBO series for its second outing, alongside “Cleaning Up” star Jade Anouka and “Peaky Blinders” alumna Simone Kirby.

Stamp will play the role of Giacomo Paradisi, the bearer of the Subtle Knife who lives in the Tower of the Angels in Cittàgazze. Anouka will play Ruta Skadi, a witch Queen who joins forces with Serafina Pekkala against the Magisterium. And finally Kirby has been cast as Dr Mary Malone, who heads up the Dark Matter Research Team at an Oxford university in our world.

This series adaptation is produced by Bad Wolf with New Line Productions for the BBC and HBO, in association with BBC Studios Distribution and Anton Capital Entertainment.
