Netflix has officially renewed the German-language period-drama series, ‘The Empress’ for a second season. The historical drama has entertained audiences worldwide, appearing in Netflix's global Top 10 non-English TV show list for five weeks in a row and topping the Top 10 in 88 countries including Mexico, Brazil, the UK, Italy, Austria, Germany, and more.

The series renewal announcement was revealed through a video (watch above) of the cast members including Devrim Lingnau, Philip Froissant, Johannes Nussbaum, and Almila Bagriacik, sharing the news. Read our The Empress Season 1 Review.

"I am incredibly grateful that our series was able to touch so many different people in Germany and around the world," says showrunner Katharina Eyssen. "The story of Elisabeth's life is one of the powers of love, but it is also one of courage to be different and hope for a better future. That is exactly what we require at this time. That is why we are overjoyed to be able to continue telling this exciting story."

“It is wonderful to see that our very own interpretation of this popular historical figure has generated interest and enthusiasm among so many people. It shows that people want to see more of Elisabeth,” adds Katja Hofem, Vice PresidentContent DACH at Netflix.

“We are still at the very beginning of Empress Elisabeth's life, and it makes us immensely happy to be able to continue her story with a second season. But even better than that is the fact that we will be able to work with Katie, Robert, the cast, and the wonderful team at Netflix for two more years," shares Producer Jochen Laube.

The cast of Devrim Lingnau, Philip Froissant, Melika Foroutan, Johannes Nussbaum, Almila Bagriacik, and Jördis Triebel will reprise their respective roles in the upcoming season. Katharina Eyssen will also return as showrunner for the second season of this moving historical drama, creatively supported by Executive Producer Robert Eyssen. Production is overseen by Sommerhaus Serien GmbH led by Jochen Laube and Fabian Maubach. Scarlett Lacey returns as Executive Producer.

The German original series is about the iconic Empress of Austria-Hungary and is led by Devrim Lingnau and Philip Froissant in the role of Elisabeth von Wittelsbach and Franz Joseph, respectively. The plot revolves around the epic love tale between Elisabeth and Franz. Elisabeth is portrayed as a young woman ahead of her time, defying the rigid standards of the nineteenth century and the court. She encounters Franz, a fractured multi-layered monarch who had a significant role in molding modern European history. The audience is taken into a dazzling illusory world in which young Sisi must fight for her place at court as well as the right not only to be the powerful figure of an ailing empire, but against the backdrop of jealousy, intrigue, and power struggles behind the scenes of the Habsburg court and the arising question of people's freedom.
