After Charlize Theron revealed The Old Guard is coming back for a sequel last month, Netflix has officially confirmed “The Old Guard 2” movie today. The streamer also announced Victoria Mahoney as the new director for the sequel, who will be replacing Gina Prince-Bythewood, director of the first film.

Prince-Bythewood is currently busy with other projects but she will remain as a producer on the sequel. “I love The Old Guard and the story and characters I was honored to put into the world. It was exciting to disrupt the genre,” said Prince-Bythewood. “I've opted not to direct the sequel but will continue as a producer. I hand over our franchise to my girl Vic Mahoney for the next chapter.

The cumulative amounts of creativity, skill and savvy that went into carving The Old Guard truly took my breath away,” Mahoney said. “I must have seen it a hundred times, and as a result, I can't express how excited I was to be invited on The Old Guard journey with ferocious badasses. Always ready to push the genre for action-loving viewers. I'd want to take a moment to thank Gina, Charlize, Rucka, Fernández, Skydance, Netflix, Marc Evans Productions, Denver & Delilah Films, and the entire team for such a daring step.”

Charlize Theron confirmed last month that the script for the film is complete and cameras will start rolling in the first quarter of 2022. Cast-related and other exciting announcements will be made during the Netflix TUDUM event on September 25.

Rucka has penned the script for the sequel with David Ellison. Skydance's producers are Dana Goldberg and Don Granger; Denver's producers are Theron, Beth Kono, and AJ Dix; and Marc Evans Productions' producers are Delilah and Marc Evans. Rucka will also serve as executive producer.

Marwan Kenzari and Luca Marinelli will be back as Joe and Nicky in the sequel. KiKi Layne will also be back as Nile along side Matthias Schoenaerts as Booker, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Veronica Ngo as Quynh. Seeing that the filming for “The Old Guard 2” will begin next year, we can expect the movie to arrive in early 2023.

Mahoney was a second unit director on J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which made her the first woman and first Black woman to direct a Star Wars film.
