‘The Old Guard 2’ Returns for Reshoots Next Month, Set for 2025 Release on Netflix [Exclusive]

Just when I was thinking that The Old Guard might have become Dead Guard on Netflix, I got an exclusive update regarding the sequel returning for a reshoot. Netflix has been completely silent on this film since it confirmed the casting and the production announcement two years ago. Although we have received small updates from the cast twice or thrice in these past years, nothing has confirmed why there is such a long delay in the release.

The Old Guard 2 wrapped production in September 2022, and as per our own analysis of when Netflix releases its films, we expected it to arrive by the end of 2023, but we never heard anything about it. Now, the film is returning for a reshoot that will begin on October 7, 2024, in Vancouver, and will take 10 days to complete by October 18th, 2024. Although it's only 10 days long, this could still be very significant considering it caused this kind of long delay.

Although I don't want to speculate much on the release date, we surely expect ‘The Old Guard 2’ to be released sometime in 2025 on Netflix. Any further delay is likely to make the fans lose interest as there is a plan for the third film to complete the trilogy as well. Surely, nobody would like to wait another five years to watch a third film.

Directed by Victoria Mahoney, Greg Rucka has penned the script for the sequel with David Ellison. Skydance's producers are Dana Goldberg and Don Granger; Denver's producers are Theron, Beth Kono, and AJ Dix; and Marc Evans Productions' producers are Delilah and Marc Evans. Rucka will also serve as executive producer.

Charlize Theron will return as Andy, Marwan Kenzari and Luca Marinelli will be back as Joe and Nicky in the sequel. KiKi Layne will also be back as Nile alongside Matthias Schoenaerts as Booker, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Veronica Ngo as Quynh. Uma Thurman and Henry Golding are the two new additions to the cast, but their characters are yet to be revealed.

The Old Guard is based on Greg Rucka's graphic novel series and follows a group of veteran soldiers from various periods of history who are now spending their lives as world-traveling mercenaries. These are not ordinary soldiers; these bands of warriors are immortal and have been here for hundreds or thousands of years. They've been through a lot, eventually dying in a gory fight before unexpectedly regaining consciousness, healing, and trying to figure out what brought them back.

The Old Guard released in 2020 was a big hit on Netflix crossing 100 million household views in the first three months of its arrival. The film also ended on a cliffhanger with Quynh back from the dead (not technically) to meet her old partner Andy.
