‘Ricky Gervais Alley Cats’ (2026) Netflix Series Review - Paws, Profanity, and Plenty of Laughs

The wait is finally over, and Alley Cats is out. The plot revolves around Gus, a cynical, foul-mouthed stray cat, and his ragtag gang of feral cats as they scrape by on the streets of Britain. The gang’s routine is disrupted when they discover a lost kitten who is separated from her family. What started off as an attempt to help the kitten find her way home ends up making a change in an otherwise selfish Gus to confront his own capacity for compassion and responsibility. Along the way, the cats encounter their arch-rival animals, dangerous humans, and the everyday hazards of street life. And mind you, all of this is accompanied by Gus’ banter filled with humor and profanity. With just five episodes of seventeen minutes long, Alley Cats is a super cute and funny watch. The plot might look normal, but when you watch it, you will see how funny it actually is.

What I loved the most was how these cats are turned into characters. They have human-like qualities, and the banter is what makes the episodes fun to watch. The humor part is pretty good. You won't encounter a single episode where you haven’t laughed out loud, and that is the best part of Alley Cats.

The only issue is that the pacing isn’t as good as one expects. With each episode spanning just a few minutes, it is a bit challenging to fit the whole of the plot in one go. And that is where Alley Cats feels incomplete. You are left wanting more, but you don’t get a lot. Perhaps had the makers added more episodes, all of this would have become easy and more fun to watch. Even with all this, they tried their best to fill the gap in those few episodes. That is why the finishing suffers a bit. Some scenes end up feeling unnecessary, while others feel slightly long. All of this could have been ignored had the makers thought a bit more about it.

Also, each episode follows a similar roadmap: humor and cats. Yes, I understand that that is the genre; however, each episode, though, has a storyline, yet the format of all five seems the same. As a result, there is a lot of monotony in everything that is shown to us. Of course, there are chances that none of this will bother you if you are someone who can adjust and watch shows with such a format. Visually, the cats look cute. The animation is great. Their appearance helps with all the jokes that they crack or the situations they land themselves into. And I felt that watching the cats, and Gus especially, was the reason to watch the show. So, one thing is sure: Alley Cats is not a total disaster; neither is it a show that will linger on your mind long after the credits begin to roll. It is a quick watch you can do if you have nothing else to watch.
