Netflix has revealed a new trailer and confirmed the release date for the Taiwanese film, ‘The Falls.’ The Mandarin-language film will release on January 29, 2022, on Netflix, worldwide.
Directed and written by Chung Mong-hong, ‘The Falls’ will be officially representing Taiwan at Academy Awards 2022. The film has already won the Best Feature Film award at 58th Golden Horse Awards.
"The Falls" follows 17-year-old Xiao Jing, who is sent home to quarantine when a classmate tests positive for COVID-19, and her mother, Pin-Wen, who is requested to take a leave of absence during the early days of the pandemic. Their relationship takes an unexpected turn as they are isolated in their apartment, which is covered in blue construction tarp due to renovation.
The cast of the film includes Alyssa Chia as Lo Pin-wen, Lee Lee-zen as Wang Qi-wen, Gingle Wang as Wang Jing, and Chen Yi-wen as Mr. Chen.
The Falls made its global premiere on September 6, 2021, at the Venice Film Festival, and was then screened on September 13, 2021, at the Toronto International Film Festival, and on October 7, 2021, at the 26th Busan International Film Festival. The film was officially released on October 29, 2021, in Taiwan.
"The Falls" is the third film directed by Chung to be selected to represent Taiwan at the Academy Awards. The previous two were "The Soul" (2013) and "A Sun" (2019). The latter was received positive reviews and shortlisted for the 2021 Oscars though it was ultimately not nominated.
