Unlucky Bae takes a known formula of love and whimsical supernatural twists. The plot follows Rin, a fine arts student who comes from a family of sorcerers. After a heartbreak due to being dumped, he attempts to curse his ex-boyfriend in what can be described as a moment of emotional impulsiveness. However, the spell backfires and strikes Khobfah, a business administration student who was nowhere even remotely related to his failed relationship. Unable to reverse the curse, Rin decides to stay close to Khobfah and use his own unusually good luck to offset the misfortune he has accidentally unleashed. What initially started as an obligation soon transforms into genuine friendship and later something deeper.

The plot is funny and cute; there is no denying that. I am always fascinated by supernatural plots, and plots like these are actually the ones that make you feel good. The good thing is that the fantasy elements never overwhelm the rest of the plot. Though just the first episode is out as of now, I hope this is how it remains all throughout. The good thing about Unlucky Bae is that right from the first episode, the makers set the tone. Most of the important characters are already introduced, which helps us to see what is going to happen in the rest of the episodes as and when they come out. I am sure there will be plots where Rin realizes his power and the full-blown confrontation that will be coming to Khobfah. But all of that will be fun to watch; I am sure about it.

There is going to be a lot of character development as we progress, and I can already sense it. The plot is unique too in its own ways. I don’t think I saw something like this before, and I am glad that the writers came up with something like this. There is a lot of chemistry between the leads, which makes Unlucky Bae a great watch. It is like these two were meant for each other. And I am glad that casting that way has been done most mindfully ever. Mac Nattapat brings warmth and emotional complexity to the character of Rin. Meanwhile, Tham Tupthong as Khobfah, as a grounded and more serious character, perfectly balances Rin’s character’s energy. That is the kind of balance we need in romcoms. Hence, I feel that the characters have been truly well written.

Visually, Unlucky Bae embraces its magical premise with the beautiful cinematography that the makers have come up with. The vibrant university setting and attractive, colorful vibes complement the series playful tone. The sense of humor is also quite enjoyable. The comedy of errors makes the show a hilarious watch. And there is no vulgar comedy. Everything shown is pretty sweet, which does indeed make you laugh. I am really hoping that the show manages to maintain this vibe for all the episodes. And if they do, then I am sure the show will become popular amongst people.

Final Score - [7/10]
