Almost two years back when Wednesday became a big hit, a rumor quickly erupted that Netflix might be losing the rights to this hit series as at the same time the studio that currently holds the rights to the Addams Family franchise was acquired by Amazon. Now, Amazon's official press site (US version) is indicating that the second season of the show may land on its premium streaming service Prime Video as well.
There is no question about Netflix being the main distributor of the "Wednesday" series, but is there a chance of any other streamer also picking up the show? It is indeed possible since the IP belongs to MGM, which has been acquired by Amazon. Netflix does hold the rights to distribute the show in each of the territories where it is available, but it may not have rights where it is not present.
If we go by Amazon's press site screenshot shown below, the listing does indicate that Wednesday Season 2 is coming to Prime Video, but the date is to be announced (TBA), which is true as the show is still filming and may not release by the end of 2025. However, when we see the last column "Distribution," it is currently blank. This is where Amazon mentions the name of the countries in which the show is released, if any title is released worldwide, it mentions "Worldwide." Again this is fine as the show is at least a year and a half away.
Will "Wednesday" actually arrive on Prime Video in the future? - This cannot be ruled out as it depends on the existing contract between MGM and Netflix which will certainly be for a limited number of years. As soon as that ends, Amazon will have full rights to the show and we will have to stream the show on Prime Video instead of Netflix. All the Netflix original Marvel Shows like Daredevil, The Punisher, and Iron Fist, ultimately moved to Disney+ as soon as their Netflix contract ended, even though Netflix was among the producers. Wednesday is a big and very popular show, who will not fight for its rights?
The first season of Wednesday released in November 2022, was viewed over 1.19 billion hours in its first 28 days, which is approximately 176 million households. Wednesday now holds the record for Netflix's most-viewed debut season of an English-language series.
‘Wednesday’ Season 2 is currently filming and the new faces joining the second season have already been revealed. Billie Piper, Thandiwe Newton, and Steve Buscemi (reportedly the new principal of Nevermore Academy) have joined the cast that Jenna Ortega leads. The returning cast also includes Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia Addams, Isaac Ordonez as Pugsley Addams, Luis Guzmán as Gomez Addams, Fred Armisen as Uncle Fester, Emma Myers as Enid Sinclair, and a few others.
Tim Burton is executive producer with Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, who also act as showrunners. Wednesday is produced by MGM Television. The executive producers also include Andrew Mittman for 1.21, Kevin Miserocchi, Kayla Alpert, Jonathan Glickman for Glickmania, and Gail Berman (The Addams Family). ‘Wednesday’ is also reportedly renewed for Season 3.
