After months of delay, the second season of Netflix's biggest hit has kicked off production. Jenna Ortega returns as the titular character in ‘Wednesday’ Season 2 which officially began filming this Monday (April 29, 2024) in Dublin, Ireland.
The first season was filmed in Bucharest, Romania, and the location change was revealed last year after the SAG-AFTRA strikes ended. The second season will take around 7 months to wrap up filming. The production is currently scheduled to end on December 20, 2024 (it may extend further). However, apart from this good news, we can also confirm that the second season will not be released before 2026. Even though the post-production will begin a few weeks later and will continue parallelly with filming, it will still take more than 12 months to finish it. As per the current schedule, post-production is expected to finish in October 2025.
The new faces joining the second season have already been revealed. Thandiwe Newton and Steve Buscemi (reportedly the new principal of Nevermore Academy) have joined the cast that Jenna Ortega leads. The returning cast also includes Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia Addams, Isaac Ordonez as Pugsley Addams, Luis Guzmán as Gomez Addams, Fred Armisen as Uncle Fester, Emma Myers as Enid Sinclair, and a few others.
The second season is officially filming under the working title, NERO. For those who are not aware of this name, Nero was the pet scorpion of Wednesday Addams in the first season, who died after being run over by a bicycle. The story was shared by Wednesday with Enid when she confirmed that this was the only occasion when she cried. It will be interesting to see if Nero actually makes an appearance and plays some role in the life of Wednesday Addams in Season 2.
The ending of the first season teased the upcoming season with the mysteries that are yet to be resolved. Laurel killed Principal Larissa Weems, who is a shapeshifter in the finale. Gwendoline Christie who played the character confirmed that she won't return for the upcoming season, confirming that her character won't be back from the dead. However, her shapeshifter ability may bring some surprises in Season 2, or we can hope so. Wednesday, who has finally got her first mobile phone, receives many texts from an unknown person in the finale's last scene. A Stalker sends a couple of images of Wednesday with her love interests, a Memoji-style gif of a Wednesday avatar being stabbed in the skull, and a text message that reads, "I'm watching you."
Tim Burton is executive producer with Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, who also act as showrunners. Wednesday is produced by MGM Television. The executive producers also include Andrew Mittman for 1.21, Kevin Miserocchi, Kayla Alpert, Jonathan Glickman for Glickmania, and Gail Berman (The Addams Family).
The first season of Wednesday which was released in November 2022, was viewed over 1.19 billion hours in its first 28 days, which is approximately 176 million households. Wednesday now holds the record for Netflix's most-viewed debut season of an English-language series.
