‘Young Royals’ Season 2 Officially Begins Filming at Netflix

The first season of ‘Young Royals,’ which premiered in July 2021 was a big hit among young audiences across the world

The second season of the Swedish coming of age series, Young Royals has officially begun filming this week (Feb 21) in Sweden. The official social media accounts of Netflix Nordic confirmed the start of the production via a BTS video of the cast (watch above).

The cast of the series was standing in from of the Hillerska Boarding School, the fictional boarding school that serves as the main setting of Young Royals. All the actors were excited and psyched for the series. The cast also confirmed that there are new faces in the second season, which will be revealed in the upcoming weeks.

The cast also teased the relationship of Simon and Wilhelm calling it a special bond. The first season ended with the aftermath surrounding the leaked video of Wilhelm and Simon by August. Wilhelm feels conflicted about accepting his relationship with Simon publically as Simon's life gets invaded by the press.

Previously, ‘Young Royals’ was renewed for Season 2 in September 2021, after its stellar performance in Season 1. The series was on the top of the Netflix charts in the country of its origin, Sweden, along with being very popular in neighboring Nordic countries - Denmark and Norway. The series gained a lot of viewers in Ukraine, Russia, the UK, and Finland as well.

The series earned widespread praise for its LGBTQ+ representation and for bringing out a gay relationship in the center of its narrative. Apart from the story-centric LGBTQ+ representation, the show has also been lauded for 'realistic' portrayals of teenagers having 'acne' and 'awkward sex' and avoiding cliches and typical YA tropes.

‘Young Royals’ stars Edvin Ryding as Prince Wilhelm of Sweden, Omar Rudberg as Simon Eriksson, Malte Gårdinger as August of Årnäs, Frida Argento as Sara Eriksson, and Nikita Uggla as Felice Ehrencrona. The cast also includes Pernilla August as Queen Kristina of Sweden, Ivar Forsling as Crown Prince Erik of Sweden, Carmen Gloria Pérez as Linda, Nathalie Varli as Madison McCoy, Inti Zamora Sobrado as Ayub, and Ingela Olsson as Hillerska Headmistress Anette Lilja.

Lisa Ambjörn, Lars Beckung, and Camilla Holter will be the showrunners based on the screenpaly written by Lisa Ambjörn (head writer), Pia Gradvall, Sofie Forsman and Tove Forsman. Lisa Berggren Eyre and Martin Söder from Nexiko are the producers with Lars Beckung of Nexiko as executive producer.
