Korean-language Dystopian sci-fi series, “Black Knight” has officially begun production today in Seoul, South Korea. Netflix has also confirmed the casting of the series with a mega-cast lineup of Kim woo-bin, Kang you-seok, and E Som.
Black Knight portrays a polluted world in 2071 when humans must use respirator masks to breathe. Only one percent of the human race has survived, and a severe social stratification has developed in the Korean Peninsula's deserted lands. Within this system, delivery drivers play an important role, and for many refugees, becoming a delivery driver is their only option of survival. Against the backdrop of turmoil, Black Knight narrates the story of a legendary delivery man "5-8" with exceptional combat skills and a refugee "Sawol" who wants to follow in his footsteps.
Based on the popular webtoon of the same name, Black Knight won the E-IP Award at the Asian Film Market — an event that connects producers of web drama, web novels, webtoon, and stories to entertainment industry specialists who may remodel them into new formats. The story drew notice for its inventive premise, which transforms a common profession, in this case, delivery drivers, into a distinct group responsible for the survival of the human race.
Director Cho Ui-seok spearheads the production to turn the story into an action-packed series. Through his past works – Master, Cold Eyes, and The World of Silence – Cho demonstrated a knack for storytelling, action sequencing, and stylish cinematography. Cho has also written the script of the series.
Kim woo-bin, who has dazzled audiences in films like Master, Twenty, and The Con Artists, as well as dramas like Uncontrollably Fond and Inheritors, plays the legendary delivery driver "5-8." The anticipation for Black Night is enormous as Kim reunites with Cho for the first time since Master.
Sawol, a refugee youngster who admires "5-8" and aspires to be a delivery driver, will be played by rising sensation Kang you-seok. Kang's performances in dramas such as The Grotesque Mansion: The Original, Light on Me, Start-Up, and Once Again have widened his range and pushed him to stardom.
Seolah, a military officer of the Defense Intelligence Command, is played by E Som. Seolah saves Sawol's life and treats him as if he were a member of her own family. E Som's acting talent has been demonstrated by her transformative performances in the films Samjin Company English Class, Inseparable Bros, Microhabitat, and Taxi Driver.
The series is produced by PROJECT318. Black Knight will be released in 2023 only on Netflix, worldwide.
