Disney has roped in ‘Lion’ Director Garth Davis to direct the next film of sci-fi franchise ‘Tron.’ The sci-fi film which is rumored to be all new in the franchise will star Jared Leto in the lead role. The film is still in the early development stage and an official announcement is yet to come as reported by Deadline.
Davis is best known for his 2016 drama film ‘Lion’ which has Dev Patel in the leading role, the film received huge success with several Oscar nominations including the Best Picture. Davis has also directed 2018’s Mary Magdalene but TRON will be his first high-budget project and also will be the first in the sci-fi category.
The last TRON film "TRON: Legacy" came in 2010 which stars Garrett Hedlund as Sam Flynn, the tech-savvy 27-year-old son of Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), looks into his father's disappearance and finds himself pulled into the same world of fierce programs and gladiatorial games where his father has been living for 20 years. Along with Kevin's loyal confidant Quorra, father and son embark on a life-and-death journey across a visually-stunning cyber universe that has become far more advanced and exceedingly dangerous. Meanwhile, the malevolent program CLU, who dominates the digital world, plans to invade the real world and will stop at nothing to prevent their escape.
However, the film was not a huge success at box-office despite positive reviews from critics. The film that has a budget of $170 million but collected only $172 million on US box-office with an overall worldwide collection of $400 million. Disney was committed for a sequel to the film but then they scrapped the plan and are now on the route to relaunch the franchise.
The TRON reboot stars Jared Leto with Jesse Wigutow penning the script. Leto is also producing along with Justin Springer and Emma Ludbrook.
