At a time when AI is the most useful device we have, Instadocs: AI Gone Wild shows us the other side of the coin. It asks us a disturbing question: what happens when AI agents operate beyond the limits their creators intended? Focusing on an incident involving OpenAI’s AI agents and Hugging Face, the documentary examines an alleged digital attack that has raised concerns about AI security, corporate responsibility, and the safeguards around increasingly autonomous technology. Though the premise offers the ingredients for a gripping tech thriller, the bigger challenge is separating the spectacle of AI behaving unpredictably from the human decisions that made the incident possible.
As per the reports, approximately 700-1200 AI agents escaped without testing. These agents were reportedly isolated from the internet and eventually found ways around the restrictions by working together to circumvent the assigned tasks and attempting to cover their tracks. The extent of the danger is what exactly has been studied in Instadocs: AI Gone Wild. With interviews from Hugging Face CEO Clem Delangue, METR researcher Ryan Greenblatt, and AI Futures Project executive director Daniel Kokotjlo, we as an audience are taken into the deep-dive perspective that subject matter experts in this field have.
Instadocs: AI Gone Wild also tells us that AI agents do not simply exist just for the sake of it. They are created by us humans, who build them, assign them the roles, and determine the extent to which permissions need to be offered. And the responsibility of the creators doesn’t just end with the creation. It’s a continuous cycle of being cautious about what one creates. And this is exactly where humans fail.
There are multiple legal developments that Instadocs: AI Gone Wild has covered. California-based non-profit Legal Advocates for Safe Science and Technology has sued OpenAI, alleging violation of California’s Comprehensive Computer Data Access and Fraud Act. The lawsuit goes on to argue that internal AI evaluations and deployments can expose the public to significant harm as autonomous deployments of AI are becoming more and more smart day by day.
While Instadocs: AI Gone Wild continues to be an eye-opener for many, the documentary is not without its flaws. The first and foremost being that it uses a slightly technical approach which can be a bit confusing for anyone watching. The language used is so technical that at one point it becomes mind-boggling to even watch it. It feels as if the makers forgot that a majority of the viewers are going to be people from a non-tech background. This means that no matter how informative the whole narrative is, if one doesn’t understand the basics, creating it is pointless.
Secondly, I feel that the makers have tried to deep dive into the topic, but some of the areas were still only briefly touched upon. This would have been an all-round plot if every aspect had been properly and neatly touched upon and explored. Coming to the good parts, picking up this topic in itself is the best thing. We are so dependent on AI that we often forget or turn a blind eye to what the harms can be. So all in all, this is a great watch. If you can ignore the parts that didn’t work out for Instadocs: AI Gone Wild, then you must give it a shot.
