A third season of the hit political thriller series starring Keri Russell has been reportedly greenlit by Netflix, while the second season is still weeks away from premiere. The Diplomat Season 2 will be released on October 31, 2024, on Netflix, with all its episodes.

As per the latest edition of Prod Week, the third season of The Diplomat is currently in active development, although it's not officially confirmed by Netflix anywhere. The Diplomat Season 3 renewal won't be surprising considering how big the debut season was. The first season featured in the global Netflix top 10s for four weeks picking up 173.46 million hours watched. It also featured in the Nielsen Top 10 charts for two weeks in the US picking up 44.90 million hours watched. The second season is still more than two months away, so Netflix may not officially announce the third season renewal just right now.

Just a week back, Netflix revealed the first look at season 2 while confirming its release date. Allison Janney joins the second season cast as Vice President Grace Penn, who was mentioned in the first season as well, but the second season will show her on-screen as well. Janney will join Keri Russell as Katherine "Kate" Wyler, Rufus Sewell as Hal Wyler, Kate's husband and former US ambassador to Lebanon, who struggles with his lack of a posting David Gyasi as Austin Dennison, Ali Ahn as Eidra Park, Rory Kinnear as Nicol Trowbridge,  and Ato Essandoh as Stuart Hayford.

In the final episode of the first season, Kate secures French government consent for Lenkov's arrest in Paris but soon discovers that the operation will be spearheaded by British forces. Kate communicates this information to Dennison, who continues to assume the operation will result in an arrest. She informs Dennison that the only person who would gain from Lenkov's death is the one who hired him, hinting that he was recruited by Trowbridge. Hayford and Hal arrive in London and are trapped in a car bomb explosion; Kate is notified about the incident, which devastates her. During the credits at the end first season's finale, a British voice identifying as Dolphin 3-6 attempts to make radio contact but receives no answer.

In THE DIPLOMAT, Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) is an experienced foreign service officer who prefers crisis situations to upper-crust settings. She was about to start her next job in Afghanistan when the White House called and told her she was being sent to London as the US ambassador to the United Kingdom. It's not the behind-the-scenes environment she prefers, but with conflict developing on one continent and boiling over on another, her abilities will still be needed. Kate will have to defuse diplomatic crises, form strategic relationships in London, and adjust to her new role in the spotlight, all while attempting to survive her marriage to fellow career diplomat and dazzling political star Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell). He's negotiated the end of several conflicts, but sharing the spotlight with a lady who has long remained in the background might be his most difficult task yet. This high-stakes political drama focuses on the transcendence and pain of long-term connections between countries and individuals.

The series is created by Debora Cahn, who is also the showrunner and executive producer alongside Janice Williams, Keri Russell, Alex Graves, and Peter Noah.
