Universal Pictures has revealed another terrifying new trailer for Nia DaCosta’s supernatural and horror movie, “Candyman,” which is hitting theaters on August 27, 2021.

Serving as a sequel to the 1992 horror movie of the same name, “Candyman” follows visual artist Anthony McCoy played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and his girlfriend, art gallery director Brianna Cartwright played by Teyonah Parris, as they move into the newly gentrified Cabrini-Green neighborhood of Chicago. When McCoy learns about the tragic true story of Candyman, he begins incarnating the vengeful spirit who can be summoned if someone says his name into a mirror five times — into his art, opening a door to a complex past and unwinding his own sanity.

For as long as residents can remember, the housing projects of Chicago’s Cabrini Green neighborhood were terrorized by a word-of-mouth ghost story about a supernatural killer with a hook for a hand, easily summoned by those daring to repeat his name five times into a mirror. In the present day, a decade after the last of the Cabrini towers were torn down, visual artist Anthony McCoy and his girlfriend, gallery director Brianna Cartwright, move into a luxury loft condo in Cabrini, now gentrified beyond recognition and inhabited by upwardly mobile millennials.

With Anthony’s painting career on the brink of stalling, a chance encounter with a Cabrini Green old-timer exposes Anthony to the tragically horrific nature of the true story behind Candyman. Anxious to maintain his status in the Chicago art world, Anthony begins to explore these macabre details in his studio as fresh grist for paintings, unknowingly opening a door to a complex past that unravels his own sanity and unleashes a terrifying wave of violence that puts him on a collision course with destiny.

Universal Pictures presents, from MGM Pictures and Jordan Peele and Win Rosenfeld’s Monkeypaw Productions, in association with BRON Creative, Candyman. Candyman is directed by DaCosta and is produced by Ian Cooper (Us), Rosenfeld, and Peele. The screenplay is by Peele & Rosenfeld and DaCosta. The film is based on the 1992 film Candyman, written by Bernard Rose, and the short story “The Forbidden” by Clive Barker. The film’s executive producers are David Kern, Aaron L. Gilbert, and Jason Cloth.

Alongside Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Anthony and Teyonah Parris as Brianna, the film has Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Domingo, Tony Todd as Daniel Robitaille (Candyman), and Vanessa Estelle Williams as Anthony’s mother. The cast also includes Rebecca Spence, Cassie Kramer, Kyle Kaminsky, Christiana Clark, Brian King, Torrey Hanson, Carl Clemons-Hopkins, Cedric Mays, Nancy Pender, Pam Jones, and Breanna Lind.

P.S. Don’t say his name.
