Unprotected: Murder in Galicia is a very unsettling watch, even if you happen to be someone who loves to watch this genre. The plot explores the tragic murder of Isabel Fuentes, a 65-year-old Spanish woman whose attempt to recover from a brutal attack ended in an even more horrifying tragedy. Rather than focusing solely on the crime itself, the documentary explores the disturbing circumstances surrounding her death, the warning signs that went unaddressed, and the failures that left a vulnerable woman without adequate protection. I have to admit, it is a difficult watch, particularly because the person Isabel should have been safest with was ultimately responsible for her death.

The documentary starts by revisiting events from April 2015, when Isabel was attacked inside the home shared with her husband, Aniceto Rodriguez, in Pazos, Verin. Rodriguez initially described the incident as a robbery, claiming that intruders had assaulted his wife and left her with serious head injuries. Isabel was rushed to the hospital, where she spent weeks in the ICU, suffering severe damage from repeated head blows with a hammer. As she slowly began recovering, the investigation into the attack started revealing inconsistencies in her husband’s account.

What I personally found the most disturbing aspect of Unprotected: Murder in Galicia is how the investigation gradually shifted its attention towards the person who initially presented himself as a concerned husband. Investigators found no solid evidence of forced entry at the couple’s home. A bloodstained hammer was also discovered, and blood spatter on Rodriguez’s dressing gown contradicted his claim that he was asleep in another room during the attack. His changing explanations only added to the suspicions surrounding his involvement.

Unprotected: Murder in Galicia builds the tension by examining how these discoveries unfolded alongside Isabel’s fragile recovery. Despite growing concerns among investigators that she might still be in danger, attempts to restrict her husband’s access to her hospital room were unsuccessful. The situation exposes a deeply troubling gap between recognizing a potential threat and having the legal measures necessary to prevent further harm.

The tragedy reaches its devastating conclusion on May 8, 2015, just 37 days after the initial attack. Isabel was found murdered in her hospital bed, having suffered fatal stab wounds. Rodriguez was also discovered in the room with serious knife injuries and initially suggested that attackers had returned to finish the job.

The makers also examine the possible financial motives behind the crime. Isabel and Rodriguez had married after spending 25 years together, and changes to her will meant that his daughter and grandson stood to benefit from her estate. Isabel had also inherited additional money following her mother's death. These details add another disturbing dimension to an already heartbreaking case, although the documentary’s strongest impact comes from the betrayal of trust at its center.

Rather than presenting the case as a straightforward murder mystery, Unprotected: Murder in Galicia raises uncomfortable questions about domestic abuse, institutional responsibility, and the protection of victims. The missed opportunities to safeguard Isabel are particularly difficult to process. The fact that investigators recognized the potential danger but could not secure the necessary restrictions makes the outcome feel even more devastating.

Unprotected: Murder in Galicia is definitely not an easy watch, nor does it offer the conventional satisfaction of a crime investigation neatly reaching its conclusion. The subject matter is disturbing, but its examination of the circumstances surrounding Isabel’s death gives the story a significance beyond the crime itself. The makers did the best job in highlighting how warning signs, institutional shortcomings, and domestic abuse can intersect with catastrophic consequences. The pacing and the rest of the presentation of the narrative are also finely done, which, in all, makes it a good yet disturbing watch.

Final Score- [8/10]
