If you are ready to watch life’s uncomfortable, bittersweet moments, then only watch Crap Happens. Spread across nine episodes, the plot revolves around a middle-aged man named Toni Fleischer who dreams of becoming a rap star. But here is the thing: being a middle-aged man, he is well aware that time isn’t by his side for him to start a career and expect instant stardom in it. He is exhausted by how life has turned out to be and doesn’t really fit in with the conventional idea of what it means to be “successful”. For starters, he didn't have a very successful career at this, and now it's his last chance. However, to make matters easy, we have his son Charly, who is quite a motivation in helping Tony realize his dreams and achieve what he wishes to. He teaches Toni not to expect approvals from the industry, but rather take his heart out in signing. And thus comes the rap, which is straight from his heart and talks about Schitten, failure, regret, and above all, love. How do we know that everything is a success? Well, by the way, the audience reacts to it. Their reaction, just like Toni’s rap, comes from the heart, which shows that somewhere they managed to connect. By the end of the show, we also see that Toni is no longer torn between being a parent and being an artist. He has now learned to manage both and even begin a healthy co-parenting relationship with the mother of his child.
As unserious as the title may sound, truth be told, the plot is very heavy on emotions and feelings. For those who suffer from midlife crisis, this series acts as a stark reminder that people can be anything they wish without feeling the need to trade their responsibilities on the family front.
The best part is that the makers did not show Tony as some kind of hero. He is the protagonist, no doubt, but he isn’t the guy who hasn’t made mistakes, self-doubted himself, or been the best family guy. He is a regular guy whom we see in the form of our fathers or friends. That’s the beauty of it. The character development is mind-blowing. In that sense, yes, Tony ends up being a hero. We get to see the journey of his ambition and love for his family.
The pacing is even. For a story like this, it was necessary that the pacing be even, and the makers were mindful of doing that. So none of the scenes in the episode we watch are rushed or feel incomplete. The entire journey is well documented for us to understand, right from the start to the end.
So if you are someone who is into plot like this, this is a great watch for you. It is the kind that is slow and requires understanding. If you live in the quiet hope of life, chances are that you will relate to this even more.
Final Score- [7/10]
