IFC Films has released the trailer for World War II thriller “A Call to Spy” (watch above), the feature directorial debut of Oscar-nominated documentary producer Lydia Dean Pilcher about the unsung female heroes of WWII. The film will be released on VOD on October 2, along with a limited theatrical release.

Produced, written by and starring Sarah Megan Thomas, who plays real-life American spy Virginia Hall, the film takes place during World War II when Great Britain’s forces were stretched thin, Winston Churchill’s Special Operations Executive (SOE) began to enlist women as spies. Their daunting mission: conduct sabotage and build a resistance. Spymistress Vera Atkins, later the inspiration for Ian Fleming’s Miss Moneypenny in the James Bond franchise, was the chief recruiter for this secret army. Atkins selected two unusual candidates: Virginia Hall, an American journalist from Baltimore hampered by a wooden leg, and Noor Inayat Khan, a wireless officer of Indian descent and an avowed pacifist. Together, they worked to undermine the Nazi regime in France. The courage, sacrifices, and grit of these three women helped quell the Nazi occupation – and ultimately turned the tide of the war.

A Call to Spy also stars Linus Roache as Colonel Maurice Buckmaster, Rossif Sutherland as Dr. Chevain, Marc Rissmann as Klaus Barbie, along with Samuel Roukin, Sarah Megan Thomas, Stana Katic, Radhika Apte, and Laila Robins. The film its world premiere at the 2019 Edinburgh International Film Festival and won awards at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival and the Whistler Film Festival.
