The final season of Survival of the Thickest is out, and here is all that you need to know about it. Michelle Buteau returns as Mavis Beaumont, the ever-so-radiant plus-size stylist whose career in fashion has somehow always been intertwined with her search for love, identity, and self-worth. In season 3, we see Mavis standing at an important crossroads in life. After fearlessly challenging the fashion industry’s treatment of plus-size women, she is determined to build something larger than her personal success. This time around, we see her more ambitious than ever on a professional front, while personally, she is still learning to navigate life with confidence and vulnerability. I have always loved this show for its refusal to treat body positivity as a lesson or a form of preaching. The makers ensure that the show doesn’t turn into yet another cycle of lectures. In season 3, we see this being enforced well. We see Mavis create a timeline for motherhood, a representation of how women generally plan things well in advance. In so many ways, we can relate to her character. And that is another beauty of Survival of the Thickest Season 3.
Without a doubt, the show's protagonist remains Buteau. Her comic timing remains effortless. It is like this genre comes naturally to her. However, there is a certain layer to her role. She is emotionally honest, which makes this character such an interesting watch overall. Even the supporting cast is a great help to the show. The friendships shown are heartfelt, just as much as the romantic relationship remains between the other roles. Be it giving each other a piece of advice or simply celebrating the nights in New York City, every character feels like an essential in the full great story of Mavis.
What makes season 3 different from the previous two seasons is the ability to ensure that the romance shown is not overly complicated. And for a season that is about to wrap up, an overly complicated romance is the last thing we need and expect. Rightly so because one doesn’t have the time to solve and anticipate the romance in length and breadth in the last season. The makers understood this and saved our time. There are no big dramatic twists and turns, and more focus on showing emotional maturity and intelligence. As a result, one feels naturally drawn towards watching the show.
Another great thing about Survival of the Thickest Season 3 is that fashion is a character in itself. Each episode serves as a fashion statement that can become an inspiration for many. So rest assured, you not only get a show that has a great plot, but also a visual treat to the eyes. Set in New York City, one cannot help but fall in love with it as and when you see the plot progress. So many body types, career-oriented people form the backdrop, which again makes the city a character too, in itself. So overall, Survival of the Thickest Season 3 is a great watch. For those of you who started with Mavis’s plot, be sure to wrap it up by watching this season.
