‘The Promised Neverland’ Live-Action TV Series in Works at Amazon

“The Promised Neverland” is in development at Amazon as a live-action series. Amazon is teaming up with Vertigo to develop a live-action English-language adaptation of the popular manga series written by Kaiu Shirai and illustrated by Posuka Demizu.

 

“Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse” duo Rodney Rothman and Meghan Malloy are teaming with Masi Oka to adapt the popular manga title. Meghan Malloy is set to write the script. The series will be directed and executive produced by Rodney Rothman, with Masi Oka executive producing along with Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo Entertainment. Fox 21 Television Studios and Amazon Studios will produce. Malloy and Rothman both worked on the Oscar-winning animated film


“The Promised Neverland,” revolves around a group of the smartest kids at a seemingly idyllic orphanage uncover its dark truth when they break a rule to never leave the orphanage grounds. Once the truth is discovered, they begin to plan an escape to save all of the children.

 

The Japanese manga series The Promised Land has sold more than 20 million copies worldwide and has been serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine published by Shueisha.

 

The Promised Land is the latest Vertigo title to come to life at Amazon and joins Lena Waithe-produced horror anthology Them: Covenant, which was picked up two years ago with a two-season order. Them: Covenant is executively produced by Sony Pictures Television, where Lee's Vertigo imprint previously had an overall deal.

 

Masi Oka is an Emmy and Golden Globe nominated actor, best known for his role of Hiro Nakamura in the hit NBC series “Heroes.” He also produced the live-action film adaptation of the anime series “Death Note.” His other current projects include a film adaptation of “Mega Man” as well as “Attack on Titan.” He is repped by UTA, Luber Roklin and Ziffren Brittenham.

 

Rodney Rothman is the credited co-writer and co-director of “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.” He is also credited as a producer or writer on films such as “22 Jump Street,” “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” and “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.” He is also repped at UTA and Ziffren Brittenham.

 

Meghan Malloy, meanwhile, is Rothman's former assistant and wrote on Spiderverse. She's also contributed to the upcoming Sony animated feature Vivo. She's with Fourth Wall Management and Hansen Jacobson. She is repped by Fourth Wall Management and Hansen Jacobson.
