Searchlight Pictures has revealed the first teaser trailer for its upcoming psychological thriller film, ‘Nightmare Alley.’ Directed and written by Guillermo del Toro, the film will hit the theaters on December 17, 2021, the same days as Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The film is based on the 1946 novel of the same name by William Lindsay Gresham, Guillermo del Toro has written the screenplay along with Kim Morgan. The movie follows Stan Carlisle (Bradley Cooper), an ambitious carny with a talent for manipulating people with a few well-chosen words, as he hooks up with Dr. Lilith Ritter (Cate Blanchett), a psychiatrist who is even more dangerous than he is.

The film also stars Toni Collette as Zeena Krumbein, Willem Dafoe as Clem Hoately, Richard Jenkins as Ezra Grindle, Rooney Mara as Molly Cahill, Clifton Collins Jr., Tim Blake Nelson as Carny Boss, Mary Steenburgen as Miss Harrington, Jim Beaver as Sheriff Jedediah Judd, Mark Povinelli as The Major, David Hewlett as Dr. Elrood, Ron Perlman as Bruno, David Strathairn as Pete Krumbein, Holt McCallany as Anderson, Romina Power, and Paul Anderson.

Leonardo DiCaprio was also in talks to star in the movie, but he was eventually replaced by Bradley Cooper.

According to Del Toro, Cooper quickly connected when del Toro met Cooper in Cooper's house to discuss the role: "We started talking script and then this started mirroring our thoughts about life and the way we viewed the world. We entered strange, darker times that led to ‘Nightmare Alley’ for me, and the way I view the world." Del Toro also believed that Cooper's experience as a director helped strengthen their connection, stating, "A director is an actor, and an actor is a director. There is no separation of the craft...this took some getting used to. Normally, I make and direct these obsessively elaborate Fabergé eggs of movies. We were on an adventure all of a sudden. I'll never shoot another film the same way again."

"Nightmare Alley" was filmed in multiple phases due to the COVID-19 lockdown. Principal photography took place in Toronto last year along with few scenes in Buffalo, New York.
